The whale rider

Witi Ihimaere

Novel

9 march 2019

this short story is about a girl and a whale, this girls name is Paikea, her grandfather did not accept her into the family, he never included her into anything, and all of a sudden whales turned up, the grandfather felt scared cause he thought, “if the whales die, then we die”. and so the girl sacrificed her self for her Iwi.

The characters I found interesting was the little girl, the Koro and the Kuia, the reason I said the little girl was becuase she was strong and she never gave up on trying show how she could be the next leader of the tribe, and she also gave her life up for the Iwi. The reason why I also choose the Kuia was because she was so confident to stand up to her husband and everytime she said she was going to “get a divorce” she still hasn`t done it which makes me think that she see`s something in him, and last but not least the Koro, so the why I also choose the Koro was because he was looking for a boy to lead the tribe, and in my own idea I thought it was because he did not want to lose his granddaughter and also because it has always been a male leading the tribe.

there were a couple of text`s i took from the story.

the characters who had to take up the challenges were the Kuia and the girl, to me the Kuia tried so hard to try and make the Koro see that Paikea was the chosen one, and that she was the next one in line and that the rules will have to change. For the girl (Paikea), she also tried to show her Koro that she was descendants and so she did so many things like dive in the water to get the rock that not even the boys could get, but while she was down she also got a crayfish for him. she also sacrificed her self for everyone. I thought it was so brave of what they both did, standing up to others, making every good for not only them, but for everyone.

I thought the title of the story was good cause it was based on the girl riding the most important whale of the herd and that not only the normal whales, but the sacred whale with the mark of the ancestor on its head listened to her.

If I could share this story with someone I would be with my brother to show him that its okay to stand out of the family and that he would always beloved no matter what, and also that its always good to make sacrifices for everyone.

Hi Kahu,

Firstly, well done on getting through your novel.

And now some points of feedback for you:
– Quotes, you need to use these in your piece. You should have at least 2 quotes that support the points you are raising in the story.
– Personal responses are required. Remember how I keep going on (like a broken record) about reflecting on yourself and the ideas in the story, as well as the how the story reflects society’s ideas? Well these are what you now require. What did you think of Paikea’s situation? How would you have felt if you were her? How would it feel to have your Koro see a boy as more important than you? I want you to put yourself in her shoes and consider this situation. Write about it.

We will chat through this feedback,

GB

Hi Kahu,

I am wondering if you ended up completing this entry? As the feedback I gave you on March 22nd was what was required to get it across the line.

Please make sure your next 4 entries include quotes and have the ‘text and self’ and ‘text and world’ writings in them.
