Boy

Director – Taika Waititi

This is a film about a young boy named Alamein but people call him ‘Boy’, he is 11 years old, he also lives with his nan, his brother, several of his cousins and Leaf his goat. after a few years in prison Boy’s father had returned to find his bag of money that he had buried years ago before he went to prison. But Boy thinks that he is there to spend some quality time with them, after a couple of weeks, Boy starts to see himself as an adult and being in the crazy horses.

Where there is one big family living in one small house. The oldest child in the house takes care of the family at home, but when it comes to school he is different he tries to act like a tough guy. Boy dreams of meeting Michael Jackson one day. It is also about ‘Boy’ and his father.

There was one character who stood out for me and that was the Nan, how she takes care of 9 kids in one small house on a farm, and when she went to a Tangi, she trusted the oldest child (Boy) to take of them for a week. As you can see she really see’s something in him, even if he does makes mistakes.

The message I had taken from this film was to not have high hopes and expectations about many things and people. Also was to be careful of who you hang around and who you think you can believe.

When Rocky was born his mother had died. Growing up his whole life Rocky thought that it was his fault that his Mother had died from his so called powers and he always grew up with no one to look upto, because his father had left him before he was even born. It made me feel sad because to me it looks like he wanted a person to look upto, which he always has (Boy), but mainly wanted a father figure to look up to and when that father figure had finally came into his life he had wanted to give up, because he had seen what his father is like and he doesn’t seem to like him.

Also another character who I feel had a hard challenge was the Nana, with looking after nine kids in a small home and with not enough money to give and yet tries her best to take care of them.

I thought that the director had came up with quite a good name for the film, even though he could have done better.

I would mainly recommend this to those who are having problems like any of the characters in this film, but also to those who have friend that are like any of these characters. Because there are somethings that you can learn from this.

I thought that this film was interesting because of all the thought Taika Waititi put in here, for example the costumes everyone wore. One of my favourite was the song choices, because most of them were Maori and also because the songs went really well with the film.
